An honest weatherman: "Today's forecast is bright and sunny with an 80% chance that I'm wrong."With this cool little Java applet, you can create a Lorenz Butterfly and observe the butterfly effect: how a very small change in the beginning can make a huge difference in the end. More technically, it is called sensitive dependence upon initial conditions and it's an important concept in chaos theory. So, what's the weatherman got to do with this? In practice, the behavior of complex systems like this is hard to predict: if you make a small error in measuring the initial conditions, you'll make a huge error in your prediction. Yes, weather is a system like this. The weatherman is wrong so often simply because it's impossible to measure the initial atmospheric conditions accurately enough to predict the weather past a few days.Of course, even if none of this complex stuff interests you, this Java applet is still a nice way to waste your time creating trippy images.

I find it clever though not convincing for Chaos Theory. I feel the word 'unrelated' to be wrong. The divergence of the end point from the initial one is not unrelated - each step on the way followed logic. And yes - it's a gorgeous time waster!
