The evils of Wal-Mart

Sam Walton didn't start out with a billion dollars and guys with machine guns forcing Americans to shop in his stores. He made his money the American way: By finding a way to do things better for less, and then doing it. Any criticism comes from also-rans. Just think about the thousands of buggy-whip makers and carriage builders who whined about the "evil automobile" a century ago...times change - adapt, overcome, or die. BTW - there are no men with machine guns forcing people to work there, "off the clock" or otherwise, either. Doesn't matter if there are no other jobs in town - if that's the case: MOVE. There *are* jobs elsewhere, and no border guards at the city limits keeping the worker from moving. People who cannot take responsibility for their own destiny deserve to be where they are. As long as they're drawing breath, in *this* country, they have at least a chance to improve their lot. Nowhere in the constitution does it say life will be easy. No more excuses. Stand up.

"The Escapist" is an amazing online publication devoted to the art and industry of the video game. Published for free online, I find many of it's articles to be well written and thought provoking.

Oh, and anyone who still shops at Wal-Mart, and supports their practices, needs to read up, and watch this movie: walmartmovie.com. Wal-Mart is systematically gutting the US' small towns, destroying good jobs, and replacing them with poor paying jobs with no benefits. They actively suppress any attempts by workers to form unions, and run sweat shops in other countries to produce many products. You may save a few dollars there, but you are supporting immoral business policies and unethical practices.

Why does this make Walmart "evil"? If I were selling video games, and the largest retailer by FAR told me they wouldn't stock my product because of the cover art, then you're damn right I'm going to change it. This doesn't make Walmart evil nor does it harm the game manufacturer. Walmart is entitled to buy what they choose to sell. The game manufacturer makes a voluntary choice to cooperate with their largest point-of-sale or face the monetary consequences. Walmart carries Grand Theft Auto, and as any fan of that series can attest, it just doesn't get any more "offensive" than that. As far as the comment about customers paying "high prices" for games at Walmart, the uninformed person who wrote the editorial apparently doesn't know that Walmart beats everyone's prices for video games. If he thinks video games are overpriced in general, thats something else - and he'd be wrong again. Retailers and manufacturers making deals has gone on in business for hundreds of years.

This page claims that the manufacturers of gaming software have successfully resisted the evil draw of Wal-Mart's "one ring to rule them all." Which might be true and deserves your consideration.

From the page: "Do you buy your electronic games at Wal-Mart? Never mind, doesn't matter. The retail games you buy at GameStop or Best Buy or online are the games Wal-Mart has decided you can buy."
