How come it takes a 3-year old to find the most blatant mistakes in game design?

I have to agree with this wonderfully well written article by Wendy Despain at The Escapist. The article points out that sometimes an industry gets so jaded, so used to The Way Things Are, that they look past some fundamental flaws. They've become so accustomed to certain conventions that they don't even notice they're using them anymore. Sometimes it takes the simple perspective of a child, with an untrained, unspoiled viewpoint to say "you know what, this actually stinks, and it shouldn't be this way". Sure, games can be great even with The Way Things Are, but how much better would they be if they were The Way Things Should Be? StumbleUpon specific: By the way, Vallam totally misses the boat on the part of the review on Spider-man. The point is that the game allows you freedom to roam, and yet its only an illusion that is shattered by the fact that certain actions don't happen until the player arrives. Even a child knows that it is ridiculous that the robbers wait for spider-man to arrive before doing anything. And that if spider-man never arrives, nothing happens. It is that convention that should be challenged and abolished. Plot points can be included by developers who are more creative, less lazy, and don't rely on cheap crutches because the industry allows them to. That was the message of the article, and you missed it.

I'm not sure that any developer should think a 3 year old is really spotting design flaws in games, when he can't even figure out how to reload a gun in game. It couldn't be that hard to figure out, after all, its probably right next to the fire button that he, and lets face it, was just mashing without any thought to objective or aiming at a single enemy.

I know shit like this is supposed to stop and make you wonder,"How did things get so complicated, they should be more simple and childlike." However it really makes me wonder how people can't differentiate between game design flaws, and a 3 year old who would be bored as shit with game with a storyline no matter how intuitive it is.
