From the website: The recent economical crisis in Argentina didn't wait to show its devastating effects: in a few months many companies closed, the acquiring power of money has decreased to less than one third and for many people has become a serious problem to find out the way to survive. Probably the most evident aspect related to this situation is the phenomenon of the cartoneros. With this name are called people (owning, just a few months ago, a normal job) that make a living from collecting paper from the trash bags in Buenos Aires streets and selling it to the recycle industry. Most of us complain about the gas prices yet the great majority of us have no clue what it is really like to have a severe economic crisis in a country in which people who had previously had well-paying and often prestigious jobs suddenly found themselves choosing many things that they had never thought they would do to get some mate in their bellies and some food on the table. I lived in Mexico where in a period of a week or two, the dollar went from 3 nuevos pesos to over 10 nuevos pesos and STAYED there... thanks to Carlos Salinas de Gotari the then President of the country and the corrupt governmental system.  As I saw this photo album, I was a) touched at the resourcefulness of these people and b) angered that so many of us continue to be so complacent about our lives, about everyone's lives because it's tough... but we can still buy our Starbucks if we need to.... every morning I get up and get my car out of the alley parking lot and almost every morning I see people rummaging through the trash, trying to find bottles or cans to sell for pennies... this is in the United States.... yet somehow, most people I know see these men and women and say "They are only there because they want to," or "they didn't take advantages of the services that are available to them" or "they must be drug addicts" and inherently the judgment is always something is WRONG with THEM and sometimes there is an anger that they are going through the trash to find the recyclables.... when will we learn that just because today we are employed, there are NO guarantees and that life can change so quickly, we never know what might come next??
