From the page:
"THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF LIFE"
Encyclopedia of Life is an ecosystem of websites that makes all key information about life on Earth accessible to anyone, anywhere in the world. Our goal is to create a constantly evolving encyclopedia that lives on the Internet, with contributions from scientists and amateurs alike. To transform the science of biology, and inspire a new generation of scientists, by aggregating all known data about every living species. And ultimately, to increase our collective understanding of life on Earth, and safeguard the richest possible spectrum of biodiversity. The content of Encyclopedia of Life, of course, has been a work in progress across the planet for centuries, reflected in the hard work of dedicated scientists and naturalists, both past and present. Planning efforts have already begun, and we have started to develop work plans, identify partners, and secure additional funding. Scanning and digitization of the biodiversity literature is now underway in London, Boston, and Washington DC. Development of Encyclopedia web pages will begin later this year. It is too soon to predict how long it will take to fully document, catalog, and list all 1.8 million species on the Encyclopedia of Life site. We intend to make key components of the Encyclopedia available to the general public starting some time in 2008. As a ballpark estimate, we believe that we can produce the full encyclopedia in about 10 years."

vision-x rated 6 weeks ago- great biology encyclopedia

briandrpm rated 6 weeks ago- E.O. Wilson's TED wish made real. It was the highlight of my Jeff Sachs Writes, Tyler Cowen Asks, Wired Warns, Europe Ponders and E.O. Wilson Educates About Biodiversity post. There are also links within the posts that deal with this issue and its impact on economies throughout the world.

MechanicalMan rated 9 weeks ago- I was watching a documentary about Edward Osborne Wilson on a Public TV Station.I think the documentary went by the name of Lord of the Ants of course featured by NOVA, and this website was mentioned, I just had to check it out. I love it so far.
