Principle 8, The Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, 1992 Q SITE THAT ATTEMPT TO EXPLAIN WHY... . . . any proposed solutions to the problems of world poverty, environmental destruction and social alienation will fail, unless they also address the role that the consumerist lifestyle plays in creating these problems. . . . in a world of limited resources, a system that advocates an ever-increasing level of consumption, and equates such consumption with personal well-being, economic progress and social fulfilment, is a recipe for ecological disaster. . . . if we in the wealthy nations want to see a just, stable and sustainable world, we are going to have to confront the issue of how unfairly it's resources are distributed in favour of a wealthy minority . . . it is a myth to insist that rejecting consumerism also means rejecting our basic needs, our technology, our stylishness, or our quality of life.

- This falls harshly on the ears of the majority of citizens whose economics consist of earn, pay, live! Generally speaking about 70% of the people control only 10% of the wealth of the nation. They are generally involved in survival within a general standard of living. They find it difficult to generate any meaningful surplus. 10% of the population control approximately 70% of the wealth(these are economic citizens of the world). The remaining 20% of the wealth is controlled by those (20%) who are retained by the 10% to keep it that way. There appears to be a disinclination to examine the real economy for fear of suicide, perhaps? Nice effort regardless. Keeps the subject open.
