The horrors of diet soda. :(

I don't think I buy the science in this article, but diet drinks are nasty nonetheless. I can't stand those artificial sweeteners-- They leave a terrible taste in my mouth. I don't really see the appeal...

As someone who conducts diabetes research, I can tell you this is a complete fallacy. Artificial sweeteners do not contain any glucose and countless studies have shown they do not promote the release of insulin from the pancreas.
If you're someone who regularly drinks regular soda and wants to lose weight, one of the BEST things you can do is switch to diet soda - this way you won't miss the sweetness psychologically and you'll be cutting lots of calories out of your diet as well.

I see Coke and other "soft drinks" as poison. Never touch the stuff.

I wash down raw carrots with Diet Coke. So I guess it balances out.

Okay, I understand that many people don't buy the insulin spike theory of post diet coke hunger. But at least in my case it is very real. But not just with Diet Coke. With any non-caloric, but sweet substance. For instance, if I drink an uncaffinated herbal tea sweetened with stevia (a natural non caloric sweetener), I get the same post-consumption hunger. Over time I've learned to steer clear of non-caloric sweet drinks of all kinds. They just tend to make me hungrier. The mechanism I can't be sure about, but the result is very clear to me.

Completely false, it does not not trigger insulin spikes. The caffine from it is what can cause your body to feel hungry. Water is better then any diet drink, but a diet drink is still a lot better then any suger filled soda.

The first time I've actually read about HOW diet coke is bad for you. I mean I always knew it, but now I know why. The artificial sweeteners disrupt your body's ability to count calories as well as triggering an insulin spike, which decreases levels of hormone sensitive liptase which reduces your ability to burn fat.
