Many of these are more or less proven hoaxes. The Beale Cipher, for instance, originated from a single pamphlet that was published anonymously and sold for 50 cents (a lot of money in 1885). The only part of the ciphertext that has been successfully decoded was already "solved" by the pamphlet's author (in other words, no progress has been made in 123 years). Furthermore, the decoded page contains only useless supporting information that needn't have been encrypted in the first place. The Oak Island Money Pit is almost certainly a hoax. Every scrap of evidence that has ever been allegedly found in the pit has mysteriously disappeared. It's probably just a sinkhole. It's doubtful that the Zodiac ciphers actually came from the Zodiac killer--or that the Zodiac murders were even committed by the same person. But people like a good serial killer story, I guess.
