    this illustrates the problem with those who believe in moral codes. They cannot distinguish what they want (everybody to be nice to each other) from what is real (that people can be both nice and nasty). Declaring "moral psychology" as an ideal or aim we might all agree on is rational and acceptable. Stepping beyond that, however, and arguing that it is inherently "right" is no different to arguing the moral supremacy of a religion or cult. It is always the first step on the road to dictatorship as it becomes increasingly necessary to justify the suppression of dissent...

    I don't agree that we just have to accept that people need some sort of higher authority to maintain control. What we need is more personal responsibility. Each individual does need to exercise self control. That is the society we are all working for, even those who don't realize it. We are transitioning from a authoritative society to a individual personal accountability society and greater personal freedom.
