The biocultural geography of abandonment in St. Louis, Missouri.

When I was a kid, I imagined living in an abandoned school, and having a different room for every thing and every day. Of course, then I wasn't worried about such things as heating bills or repair costs! In this exploration of abandoned buildings and their rehabilitation or demolition, the story of this school has a happy ending: as apartments for senior citizens.

Our project documents the disease of abandonment of the built environment and its treatment. We aim to reveal the odd interaction of social and ecological forces that lead people to build, abandon and reclaim buildings and structures. Thus, we draw upon the fields of history, urban archaeology, ecology, sociology and architecture to investigate the troubled urban areas of the Midwest.
