Awesome photo, Havana, Cuba by Eastman

Backpacking through Italy one summer we happened upon an abandoned villa. We stayed there for weeks, living like tramps and kings. We washed our clothes in a nearby creek and hung them to dry in the foyer beneath a majestic chandelier. We feasted on food "borrowed" from local fields and sat for hours talking about life and love and things of great and little importance. At night we built a fire in the grand fireplace and slept in front of it. Sometimes when he would wake to feed the fire he would wake me, too, and we would make love half-sleeping like a dream. A dream, a dream, it was all a dream.. but I could have stayed there forever.

Thanks for the inspiration Saskia.

Love this photo series of Vanishing America.

Eastman has an amazing style, and I particularly love his Vanishing America series. As suburban sprawl and strip malls conquer the country, countless `Main Street' buildings are being neglected, or torn down to be replaced by something modern and new but not necessarily better. In Vanishing America, Eastman made the ultimate road trip, crisscrossing the nation dozens of times to capture these sites before they disappear. Movie houses, juke joints, soda fountains, barbershops, roadside diners, and storefront churches--these `Ma and Pop' operations reflect idiosyncrasies of the country's vernacular style with a cool melancholy that evokes the work of Edward Hopper, Jack Kerouac, and William Eggleston. These also offer a provocative portrait of the almost deafening emptiness that has descended upon small communities everywhere.
