It's this stuff that makes sharks possible, and sometimes sharks eat children.

How fiendishly clever. Dihydrogen Monoxide. Water. The whole of the first two lectures worth of information from CHEM1301 needed to grasp this joke must definitely qualify those in the know as being worthy of looking down their noses at all the "stupid" people in the world and laughing at them. This joke is old and tired, and it hardly qualifies as satire. It especially doesn't qualify as the mind-blowing best satire in the world that the snobbish pseudo-intellectual reviewers before me would have you believe it to be.

[ftp] What is Dihydrogen Monoxide? Dihydrogen Monoxide (DHMO) is a colorless and odorless chemical compound, also referred to by some as Dihydrogen Oxide, Hydrogen Hydroxide, Hydronium Hydroxide, or simply Hydric acid. Its basis is the highly reactive hydroxyl radical, a species shown to mutate DNA, denature proteins, disrupt cell membranes, and chemically alter critical neurotransmitters. The atomic components of DHMO are found in a number of caustic, explosive and poisonous compounds such as Sulfuric Acid, Nitroglycerine and Ethyl Alcohol. [/ftp] This is an old controversy. Most of the steam about DMHO has condensed and is now water under the bridge. Especially the issue of solid DHMO accumulation in home freezers. Apparently frost-free refrigirators are able to elimitate this. But it's been proven that usage of electrical appliances in DHMO contaminated bathtubs is not a safe practice.

Oh man, picking on stupid people (or conspiracy theory buffs). Hardly seems nice, but is definitely funny.

Genius. Never has satire been so complete!

Not mentioned on this site, but people who ingest more than 10 litres DHMO in a short time die by the DHMO induced brain oedema. This condition is called hyperhydration. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperhydration
