The statement I see in this is that our concept of how something is made, or labeled, or how it looks often overrule the reality and functionality of the objects themselves. Making something that to our eyes is garbage out of something like fancifully painted porcelain is a play on the fact that we often throw away things that are perfectly good, merely because we can't abandon the idea that the object is garbage because of its ordinariness, or availability Likewise, these objects are functionally garbage, but most people would be hesitant to throw them away because they aren't mass produced and don't look ordinary.
