How to Build a Universe That Doesn't Fall Apart Two Days Later by Philip K. Dick, 1978

A long, but interesting read. Philip K Dick ponders, 'What is reality?' From the page: The pre-Socratic Greek philosopher Parmenides taught that the only things that are real are things which never change... and the pre-Socratic Greek philosopher Heraclitus taught that everything changes. If you superimpose their two views, you get this result: Nothing is real. There is a fascinating next step to this line of thinking: Parmenides could never have existed because he grew old and died and disappeared, so, according to his own philosophy, he did not exist. And Heraclitus may have been right--let's not forget that; so if Heraclitus was right, then Parmenides did exist, and therefore, according to Heraclitus' philosophy, perhaps Parmenides was right, since Parmenides fulfilled the conditions, the criteria, by which Heraclitus judged things real.
P.S. I think Mr Dick was just a tad bonkers. Genius - but bonkers.

"I began to think, Maybe each human being lives in a unique world, a private world, a world different from those inhabited and experienced by all other humans. And that led me wonder, If reality differs from person to person, can we speak of reality singular, or shouldn't we really be talking about plural realities? And if there are plural realities, are some more true (more real) than others? What about the world of a schizophrenic? Maybe, it's as real as our world. Maybe we cannot say that we are in touch with reality and he is not, but should instead say, His reality is so different from ours that he can't explain his to us, and we can't explain ours to him. The problem, then, is that if subjective worlds are experienced too diffrently, there occurs a breakdown of communication... and there is the real illness. "

How to Build a Universe That Doesn't Fall Apart Two Days Later by Philip K. Dick, 1978 I cannot begin to try to describe the genius of this man. Everything he writes makes me smile, and think.

From the page: "Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away." Philip Dick has some real moments of brilliance but soon goes on to ramble about some experience

'It is an eerie experience to write something into a novel, believing it is pure fiction, and to learn later on--perhaps years later--that it is true. I would like to give you an example. It is something that I do not understand. Perhaps you can come up with a theory. I can't.'

"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away." Great man. He caught a glimpse of how things are. But, kinda lost himself in it. Pity, but still, a genius.
