Actually, controller failure and motor failure are the top two causes of drive failure. I've rescued two drives by replacing the controller board, but motor failure is almost always fatal. You can use a volt meter on the motor leads to see if there's any power to the motor. One one... more

Try backing up, if you had you could have just bought a new one with more space and restored your backup on it. Same difference, easier and possibly quicker, who knows maybe it's cheaper.
