This reminds me of the approach to New York as I experienced it in 2000. I was travelling in a train from Philadelphia and the last hour or so of the trip was through a vast area of abandoned industry. Nothing but desolation, and in the distance the outlines of Manhattan glimpsed through smog. Is your heart supposed to beat faster when you first see New York? Mine did not. I looked away, thinking maybe I would feel some anticipation when the train got closer and the view was clearer. No. Just a sense of moving through what was once a city and is now abandoned, and all the loss that implies, to a "living" city where people likely never looked at the trail of waste. It was a stupefying assault on the senses, as confronting as any desolation I've seen in eastern Europe but with less excuse. Image found via TKS
