A simple way to troubleshoot your car's check engine light and save money.

take your car to an auto parts store when a check engine light comes on. i have known about this, but it is a great message to pass along. mechanics will try to swindle you out of money a lot of times, and auto parts stores are still in it to please their customers.

Your local auto parts store may be able to diagnose your problem for free.

You can buy the diagnostics kit for around $300 per make of car (my ford program diagnoses a mustang, f-150 and explorer, but can't do my friend's chevy.) It runs from any laptop and then you can do this at home while you're repairing. This is a great idea, however. I never thought of an auto parts store having these...but of course they do!
