I appreciate the detail that we frequently find on "Damn Interesting" pages -- but I still think that the melodramatic language is not called for. Errors in such a complex system are expected, which is why double-checking and highly specific protocols are called for. Presentations of these errors would be more informative and interesting (if less titillating) if the risks were more accurately presented.

I'd heard of the incident with Stanislav Petrov, but the rest I hadn't heard of. Really interesting article about how many times over the course of the Cold War some malfunction nearly set in motion the end of the world.
