Muzafer Sherif's psychological experiment on group conflict, disguised as a summer camp.

From the page: "To decrease the potential impact of variables (other factors that could prompt hostility), Sherif and his colleagues had looked for boys of similar age and intelligence, all Caucasian and Protestant, all middle-class, none from insecure homes and none known to be troublemakers." - interesting story, however i don't agree with the reason of how they choose their subjects. sounds like a lame excuse to choose only white kids. but i guess that was the mind set of a lot of people back in 1954. low class/insecure homes = troublemakers

Very interesting experiment. I suspect it benefited researchers and the scouts. We learned something about how seperate groups will operate and they made a bunch of friends. Everybody won.

i have always said "there are'nt enough experiments on young children." There werent any biological experiments, YET, but hey, its a start. :D

Interesting, all right, but those pictures aren't very convincing, because they only got the eagle right. That tent had not been invented in the 1950s, and that snake is not a rattler.

Yes, it would be interesting to see the results of some differing groups; one group WASP and one group black, oriental, native american, etc.; girls instead of boys; just one group girls, or one group jocks and one group bookworms, etc.

From the page: "Overall, the experiment was seen as a success. Not only had both aspects of Sherif's hypothesis been verified, but several further conclusions had been reached. One was the observation that removing the boys from the competitive settings was not enough to reverse intergroup hostility. Another was that major differences in background are not necessary for conflict to emerge."
