    Wall, a 20-year-old sociology and English senior, decided to assume the characteristics and attire of a "typical" Muslim woman for a year starting in late April. She wears the traditional veil, or "hijab," and loose-fitting clothing everywhere she goes and does not consume pork or alcohol in public. She avoids eye and physical contact with men and has adopted modest habits like walking with her arms glued to her sides or crossed in front of her to hide her chest.

    I thumbed it up because she wants to understand a hijab and it's effects for herself and not doing it as as study for other people. Seems so awesome to me.

    very interesting she is a muslim she just has not accepted it yet . Hamdulillah I love my hijab .

    Instead of trying to live like a Muslim in a non-Muslim country she should try living like a non-Muslim in a Muslim country.

    I call it the "Nico Complex" when a woman is so fed up with overtly sexual comments and society that she starts "dressing down" or covering herself voluntarily. Nico was a singer of the Velvet Uderground in the 60's & she was a supermodel as a teen and then learned to admonish her natural beauty because no one would take her seriously without all the sexual superficial innuendo. every woman does it at some point in her life at it does not always come from low self esteem Kudos to this woman, god knows Texass/Austin is full of stupid mouth diraherra comments towards young women or anyone "different" or not showing the subservient traditional womens look ...it's like a 3rd world country. I think she would have a different experience in Europe or other US large cities where tolerance is the norm. I personally love doing this when i have to go into overtly sexual places like shopping malls or out to a stupid club or event where i know there will be alot of scantily clad girls.

    Love the fact that someone was willing to go to such lengths to try and understand why we observe Hijab. A few misrepresentations but all in all a great article. Qudos to Spencer Wall.
