The giant amazon water lily is definitely an enigma, and through natural selection, received some of the best traits possible and thus commands the water surface. Some of its traits include:
-spiny armor against predators
-enormous expanding potential up to 6 ft. (crinkles flatten out here)to block light to underwater plants
-giant air-filled struts to float; etc.
And the giant lily flower is equally impressive; closing 3 times a day to avoid pollinating itself, and producing a scent attractive to beetles. When the beetles come, they are trapped for 24 hours, and showered with pollen, so that they can fertilize other flowers for greater diversity. As it is now pink and no longer attractive to beetles, it returns back to the water.
