harrystottle discovered 3 months ago- I read an explanation for this at least 30 years ago which made sense then and now. Essentially it's down to the average IQ of the family into which you are born. If you have two average adults as parents and we regard the IQ of the newborn as zero, then the average IQ of the family on the date of birth is 200/3=67. 2 years later, along comes baby number 2. By now the IQ of baby no 1 is, say 40. So the average at that point is 240/4=60
Thus, if the second born arrives before the IQ of the first child has exceed the average he was born into, the second child is born into a less intelligent environment and their own intellectual development is reduced accordingly.
However, if the gap between first and second born is more than about 8 years, the average IQ can begin to move in the direction of favouring the 2nd born.
