eta-carinae discovered 13 months ago- From the page: "I'll be damned! Douglas Adams nailed it! The mystical number in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, 42, is a key number in predicting the actual Weight of the universe!"

aUser rated 8 months ago- Well, comparing it to Douglas Adams is a little bit of a stretch, but the rest was interesting.

gellan rated 12 months ago- "42": Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Foreshadows Actual Mass of Universe!

Foggy1 rated 12 months ago- *Giggle* *Snort* The answer really is *42* Well, not for REAL real...Coincidences do amuse me though.

tharglet rated 13 months ago- Ahh, coincidences can be amusing ;)

cholling rated 13 months ago- The galaxy doesn't "weigh" 3*10^42 kilograms, any more than I'm fifteen gallons tall and thirty hectares old. They mean mass.

leomotta rated 13 months ago- Remember that mass depends on choice of units and therefore is not a fundamental constant of Nature. In fact, it seems that the more natural unit of mass in Nature is MeV/c^2 rather than kg.

AstroGirlBunny rated 13 months ago- Douglas Adams still rules! (ok - maybe it's not correct but still cool to read...) I have my towel. Do you? ;-)

aRTy-nz rated 13 months ago- Well, I suppose this was intended to be funny, but didn't make it with me. The fact that a galaxy weighs about 10^42 kilograms is not really useful, because the question is supposed to be about life, the universe and everything, so the number would be more like 10^54 kilograms at least. Sorry! Try http://ray.tomes.biz/b2/index.php/b/2007/02/22/p77 for the real question.

imorgen rated 13 months ago- zoemba is right of course, but all the same WOW.

- Why do people mix up 'Galaxy' with 'Universe'so many times? A galaxy like the Milky Way is just one tiny element in the whole universe (which contains many, many, many galaxies). That said: Douglas Adams Rules! :)
