- Technically, "syllables" is comprised of only two. The writer uses his poetic liscence and the hyphen to add a syllable: SYLL-ABLE-S. If he does not, the punchline is impossible because DIFFICULT can be spelled completely. Instead (to parry linguists and poets like myself) he could have written it like so: TO CONVEY ONE'S MOOD WITHIN SEVENTEEN SYLLABLES IS VERY DIFFI... This way, the writer can eliminate the use of hyphenated words (as well as misplacing the hyphens). The verse appears tidier and it engages the reader because it presupposes that the reader is intelligent, which you are. Now one of my own: An Haiku misstep Is no fatal tragedy-- I'll get over it.
