Perlis won the first Turing award in 1966. Here are his "epigrams" regarding programming. Some of them may be controversial, or at least impractical, today. I mean, try this one on for debate: "The use of a program to prove the 4-color theorem will not change mathematics - it merely demonstrates that the theorem, a challenge for a century, is probably not important to mathematics."
