Nice tutorial on how to install Ubuntu. I've been busy with projects on my Windows machine, but I'm dreaming of my next Ubuntu installation.....

Also includes handy list of packages if you're switching from Windows.

I didn't think this was ever going to happen to me... ...but I've gone Ubuntu! I'm trying out this Linux distribution for several reasons:
  • Curiosity
  • I can dual-boot and still run Windows XP when I need
  • Windows XP has really been playing up/pissing me off recently
  • I am a programmer and want to expand my horizons
  • I had a 7Gb 'recovery partition' on my hard drive going to waste (having made the backup DVDs)
  • More curiosity
Honestly, apart from some teething problems, I am very impressed. It does a whole load more out of the box than Windows ever did, it found 97% of my hardware and runs 95% perfectly (and that 5% I can live with until I find a solution), it looks sexy and seems pretty nippy. It updated itself and my software quickly, plus it can install loads of different and free software or drivers with a few clicks from a centralised repository - loads better than the google, download, install, reboot, nag about registration process that is standard windows fare. Just pick what you want and click OK. Great! Conclusion: Linux isn't hard any more, a little tricky at best. XP and Office have some serious competition FOR FREE! Sure, you need to understand a bit about computers and be prepared to search/Google/ask for help, but once installed and updated it's generally been a happy affair. This guide is a really handy start to get things running swoobily. I guess that makes me a real geek now!

Otherwise very nice tutorial but do NOT install flash like that and pass package management without good reason. You can get it from repositories, the beta is added to backports and it is for real, no need that "update-flashplugin"-command anymore.
At now it is version 9.0.21.78.2ubuntu1~edgy1
