Loads of good info about psych meds. If you can't find the answer about a med, just ask.

Good site, funny, down to Earth. BUT. There are problems with the drug information on it. Some is factual, some misinformation. I have panic disorder, generalised anxiety disorder and depression. Xanax is the only drug that controls my panic disorder and G.A.D., in fact Xanax was the first drug ever specifically approved for panic disorder (FDA approved 1980). This site states it is the "most potent of all the benzos" (benzodiazapenes) - and "the most addictive of all the benzos" The actual facts are that Xanax (alprazolam) has the highest anti-anxiety potential, with the least sedation. Most potent? For what? Valium is much longer-lasting, yet less anxiety-reducing and more sedating. Valium is a benzo. Sleeping pills are benzos - least anti-anxiety action, most sedation. Using "most potent" without any given context gives a false impression of "strong, possibly dangerous full-on drug". Hormonal changes with Xanax? First I've heard of it (read everything I could - all the studies), my psych nurse friend rang me when I was writing this and I read the Xanax section out and she was going "Well, that's wrong, and that's wrong, and that's wrong" which I knew too. Again, "most addictive" - well, I have been told by all three of my successive psychiatrists (and read the independant studies they were based on myself) that panic disorder sufferers did not get addicted and had no real problems discontinuing Xanax use...the context in this site was Xanax use for panic/anxiety disorders. Made no SENSE to talk about mental illness and include in the main five categories "panic/anxiety disorders" then give advice on a drug specifically used to treat panic disorder (Xanax) then tell people it was very addictive - it CAN BE when taken for other reasons long-term, but not for panic/anxiety disorders! Read a few other psych drugs that I know a lot about and noticed the same thing, half-truths mixed with facts and some downright errors. Misinformation like this is dangerous - and mental illness is not to be taken lightly, nor the drugs and information about them.. I guess what I am trying to say is GREAT site about "get your shit together and take your meds if you need them" but go elsewhere for more accurate information about the medications themselves.

Crazy Meds! The Good, The Bad &The Funny of Neurological Medications

lots of great info on psych meds. gives an unsanitized look at the pros and cons of neurological medications. contains all of the factual info on drugs, but more importantly has a lot of info you won't find on the drug manufacturer's website. this is the stuff your psychiatrist/medical practitioner should really tell you, but often doesn't.

Warning, shocking imagery. "When you're mentally ill and you're not taking the right medications, it sucks syphilitic donkey dong while a red-hot poker is being jammed up your ass." - - - - Informative and funny but practical resource for psychiatric medications and issues.

Crazy Meds! The Good, The Bad &The Funny of Psychiatric Medications Excellent resource/repository of information about psychiatric medications that is down-to-earth and practical, yet scientifically valid and accurate (this from my perspective as an M.D.). From the page: "If you're in shock about or trying to understand the whole overwhelming deal of medications and being classified as some flavor of mentally interesting / mentally ill / batshit crazy, or want to know what this site is all about, just keep reading. I know, the meds suck donkey dong. But you know what? When you're mentally ill and you're not taking the right medications, it sucks syphilitic donkey dong while a red-hot poker is being jammed up your ass. That's what it's like without any meds at all, and that's what it's like if you're taking completely inappropriate medications. And that's what it's like if you're taking psychiatric medications when you shouldn't be taking any at all. "
