I remember reading something like this article: A group of people are given a chance to bid on a $20 bill, and can only go up in $1 increments, but both the "winner" and the "runner up" have to pay their bids. After the first few rounds, most people drop out, and by the time the bidding goes over $20, only two people are left bidding. Neither one of them wants to give up because they both want to "recoup" some of their losses.

I don't think it's that bad, sure, praying on idiots is wrong, but there's a market. What's worse are those late night quiz shows, which you have to call a premium rate number to try and guess something really obscure, and your chances of getting through to the studio to register an aswer are slim to none. They should be illegal.
