A cast of international programming heroes get (lovingly) roasted for their beards and questionable dress sense. I hate that I found this so amusing.

Oh that's me alright. Its not just programmers, tho. Any hobby or profession that involves long periods of really deep thought and use of creativity and/or intellect tends to leave little time for unnecessary fussiness about the particulars of one's appearance, which such types usually see as superficial anyway. Look at Einstein for example. More extreme examples of this type of behavior can and often do extend to absolutely no hygienic practices at all - in other words, "dirty", "stinking", and "filthy" are not uncommon adjectives one could use to describe some with this "malady".
