For those of you stumped by those cipher puzzles in the newspapers...here you go. I've never really seen these kinds of ciphers put to use besides the newspaper puzzles, though, but you can use these strategies to form secret messages between your friends for some good fun.

A good introduction to encryption, concentrating on substitution ciphers.
