kamir discovered 3 months ago- "The stunning collapse of one of the West Coast's biggest wild salmon runs has prompted even cash-strapped fishermen to call for an unprecedented shutdown of salmon fishing off the coasts of California and Oregon."

sargt000 rated 3 months ago- humans are retarded. 7 years ago i worked for the first time doing salmon work. it was peak year for the run i was working on - something like 4 million fish returned to the system i was working on, and the spawn rates were great. we had loads of dead fish spawned out on the river...mmm...maggoty goodness (that's where i experienced my maggot shower - i've blogged about it i'm sure). last peak year there was less than a million. that means less than 25% of what was expected to have survived to come back to spawn actually did. now that system has all but collapsed...as have most of the other systems here. last year they closed the sockeye fishery completely on the fraser river. the signs have been showing for years, and we're just now paying attention? good for these fishermen. though sadly, the salmon could be fucked. i'd tell them to get into the apiary business, but that's probably a bad idea too.
