this article is so right on the money. go to laos and cambodia now, before it gets worse. i got up at 6am to see the procession of the monks in luang prabang. i was with these two other girls, and there was another couple but other than that, no other tourists - but we were staying well away from the "touristy" area, which at first we lamented but then we grew to appreciate. but i have to say - it pissed me off because the girls i was with were taking photos of the monks on their procession - and it's well known that you are never to take a photo of a laos person without first asking permission, especially monks on their morning procession (they walk the streets and the laos people give sticky rice to each of the monks - a pinch each, which is their food for the day. it's incredible). thailand had changed so much from 2002 to 2007, and i expect laos and cambodia to go in the same direction, which makes me sad. vietnam is already there; i wouldn't go back. luang prabang was one of my favorite places in laos - amazing. and siem reap was my favorite in cambodia (that's me eating cambodian BBQ in my sticky, in siem reap), but you can see the changes afoot for sure.
