creativity discovered 10 months ago- Okay, I have to throw my two cents in here. Do I feel kind of bad for this guy who worked hard and saved $59,000 to bring back to his family in Guatemala? Sure. But the bigger picture here is that he was here ILLEGALLY. Did he know he had to declare the money? No. Does that mean he should get off because he didn't know the law? Absolutely not. If he was a legal citizen of the U.S., then sure, cut him a break. Fine him a % of the money above $10,000 and give the rest back. But he entered the country illegally, didn't pay taxes, got (I'm sure) the benefit of social services, etc. I'm sorry, but it sucks to be you. One line really annoys me: "Marisol Zequeira, an immigration lawyer, said illegal immigrants such as Zapeta have few options when dealing with the U.S. government." Gee, you think? The key word, again, is "illegal." They SHOULD'T have many options. That's because they're BREAKING THE LAW. I'm perfectly happy with immigration, and people from diverse backgrounds entering the country. But when you don't do so legally - even if they were from England or Canada, I'd feel the same way - you don't get all the benefits of being a legal citizen. Okay, off the soap box I go.

- We are all immigrants, except for the Native Americans. I want my country back!

wisdom-of-trees rated 10 months ago- This story is revolting. Lets say for the sake of argument that he had been a U.S. citizen; in which case at the miserly sum of 5.50 an hour, this man would NOT have been paying taxes and would have received all of his money back at the end of the year in refunds. Now, I know that's not the point of the story, and that the 59,000 he received was essentially illegal...but the fact that he can't take this pitiful sum (what is 60,000 to the U.S. Government?) states something about the very lack of humanity our government is not willing to show to one individual. All I see lately is the B.S. that Washington is throwing out stating that Iraq is a humanitarian effort, which is costing us as Taxpayers Billions of dollars. Where do we start acting like people and stop acting like bureaucrats looking to make an example of Illegals by taking away their money.
