gregux discovered 24 months ago- Americans are becoming more isolated from one another, and the resulting loneliness is taking its toll. The extended family gave way to the nuclear family, and now one-quarter of all households consist of just one person. We have few, if any, friends we can truely confide in. Old people are abandoned in geriatric facilites. Technology has advanced so far that we no longer have any connections to our food sources (when's the last time you actually saw a cow or a cornfield up close?), have no need to talk face-to-face with one another (and can even have "meaningful" relationships with people we have never and will never meet), and can shop for almost anything without getting up from the computer. We've made progress, but left ourselves behind in the process. Humans are social animals, and we're doing to ourselves what we've done to animals in zoo cages.
