To be more precise, this test involves the patient drinking a solution with a little urea that has been labeled with radioactive C-14 which H. pylori metabolizes to ammonia and C-14 labeled CO2 which is exhaled through the lungs. We detect the amount of C-14 labeled CO2 to determine whether there is H. pylori present. it's a relatively old test but a good one.
