We live in a cruel cruel world, dominated by those with the most greed for money, who usually put this ahead of compassion for life, be it animal or human. It's horrible that factory farming even exists, it's inhumane, barbaric and immoral. Animals feel pain too, they may be less intelligent than humans but that does not justify torturing them. Eating animals is natural, but they should be raised in a humane way and killed in a humane way, free-range sounds pretty good. Perhaps one day in the distant future we'll have all the alternatives and none of the limitations, and noone will eat meat, but at this moment in time it's an often necessary part of the human diet. Another problem caused, ultimately, by money and greed - capitalism. These companies and people keep animals in factory farms just to improve income, when they are already making huge profits and could easily afford to raise the animals free range.

Given that most people are going to remain meat eaters this is a valuable and essential campaign, both against the inhumanity of factory farms and for the sake of human welfare. Is it any wonder that cancer rates continue to increase when people eat the produce of battery farms and - indirectly - the animal feed industry (see the recent dioxin-contaminated animal feed in Ireland, December 2008)?

To truly help animals, we need to focus on learning not to EAT them and let them live out their lives as they are meant to live. Going organic and free range doesn't mean squat, people. The animals are still raised solely for human consumption and they still die a tragic, unnecessary death. I can't respect any organization who operates under the assumption that what they are doing is helping animals when, in essence, they are only perpetuating an act of violence no Earthling should have to endure.

Unlike some other animal welfare groups, CIWF does not pressure you into turning vegetarian/vegan. Instead, it stresses choosing organic/free range meat, eggs and dairy to minimise the impact we have on animal welfare.
