Eugenio Montale (October 12, 1896--September 12, 1981) was an Italian poet, prose writer, editor and translator, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1975.Montale wrote a relatively small number of works. Four anthologies of short lyrics, a quaderno of poetry translation, plus several books of prose translations, two literary criticism books and one of fantasy prose. To these he accompanied an uninterrupted collaboration with the main Italian newspaper, the Corriere della Sera. Almost a Fantasis Dawn's coming, I can sense it by the tarnished silver shimmer on the walls: and now it rims the shuttered windows. And so the sun comes back, but not the random voices or the milling sounds that usually begin the day. Why this silence? I begin imagining a special day, enchanted, that will free me from the carousel of equal, measured hours. The pent-up force in me, unconscious sorcerer, released by time, will gush and flood. I will come forth, subdue tall houses and the empty streets. I will confront a world of untracked snow, soft as a vista in a tapestry. An evening ray will cross the tufted sky. Filled with invisible light, the woods and hills will praise me for the gift of their renewal. With joy I'll read the black figures of the branches, stark against the white, an esoteric alphabet. All history will diminish to a point that's just in front of me. No sound will be around to break my spell of solitary bliss. Just sailing past, or maybe landing on a pole, a hoopoe bringing March and spring.
