I am a keeper of layer hens, and I know what surprisingly complicated and intelligent creatures they are. That this is allowed to go on is the sort of thing that damns a speices, such as Homo sapiens Be a real human being and stop supporting the torture of some of the sweetest creatures on Earth. Every "conventional" bite of chicken you eat is at the expense and unnecessary pain of another creature. Buy free-range birds, and save your soul

From the page: "I was almost knocked to the ground by the overpowering smell of feces and ammonia. My eyes burned and so did my lungs, and I could neither see nor breathe. There must have been thirty thousand chickens sitting silently on the floor in front of me. They didn't move, didn't cluck. They were almost like statues of chickens, living in nearly total darkness, and they would spend every minute of their six-week lives that way." Michael Specter, New Yorker, April 14, 2003

"Due to selective breeding for rapid growth, many of the chicks are prone to leg disorders."
