Free licenses softwares. A good start if you want to taste some freewares and compare with their commercial counterparts. Great for your purse !

A whole CD .iso file of free software... this is great that it's all on one collection, but I don't know if I would agree totally with some of the choices... I don't know about ClamWin... I know AVG isn't open source, but I like that better, and again, Maybe Spybot S&D isn't open source, but I'd rather have that... Also, no Openoffice? Maybe it wouldn't fit on the CD?

Still, it's a nice package for someone who doesn't know where to start...

Open source may not be a slick as commercial software as "poorsod" says, but the price is right and the functionality may meet your needs just as well. Why pay for bells and whistles you don't need?

The problem with free-as-in-freedom software is that it just doesn't measure up. Firefox and Thunderbird are the only examples I can think of where a piece of free-as-in-freedom software is significantly better than the program it was meant to replace. Linux is a headfuck, Audacity isn't a patch on Sound Forge, Songbird comes in waaay after iTunes, and even The Gimp isn't up to speed with Photoshop yet. You need proper commercial funding and full-time employees to make quality software, and it's going to take a lot of work to change that. I don't like the status quo any more than the next guy but unfortunately our current situation still works.
