Got a clunker to trade in and get that $3500-$4500 rebate? Here are the rules for doing so. My wife's car doesn't qualify, because 'when new' (a decade ago) it had a combined mpg (city/highway) of 21 mpg. The best it gets now is 15 mpg. But at least it's not a gas...

"Cash for Clunkers" is wrong! Why should my tax dollars go to pay for someone else to get a new car? No, I'm not a conservative. I'm actually somewhat liberal. But there's a difference here. I'm all for my tax dollars going for the common good. I think we should all be willing to contribute to the public needs of society: fire, police, education, healthcare, etc. Yes, I support a single-payer healthcare plan. But there's a huge difference. Healthcare is something everyone NEEDS, a healthy society NEEDS. A new car is not a public need, it's a personal luxury. Many of these people have perfectly functional old cars and don't need new ones. I object to my tax dollars being used for a select few's personal luxury purchases...and corporate profit gain. Arguing that it's good for society as a whole to get these cars off the road doesn't work for me. The impact to the environment and oil dependence is insignificant. And I MIGHT not be as furious about the Cash for Clunkers program if it at least had the restriction of requiring purchases of American cars. But the thought that my tax dollars are subsidizing the profits of foreign car manufacturers' just infuriates me.

You will pay State Tax on the $3500-$4500 rebate, so deduct it.

That 18mph bit is going to get a lot of Cars disqualified :( You can still get a good rebate on a hybrid though. Hybrid Tax Credits
