From the wikipedia article: "This incident is one of several high-risk decisions that were made by strategic nuclear forces over the years of the Cold War, often at the last minute, by administrative personnel far from the chain of command." I.E. he's not the only hero, on either side. Also, cite your sourcessssss....

STANISLAV PETROV. Thanks 'piever'. Stanislav Petrov was honored in a meeting at the United Nations in New York City Jan. 19, 2006, which he described as his "happiest day in many years." At the United Nations meeting, The Association of World Citizens, an international peace organization with branches in 30 countries, presented Stanislav Petrov with a special World Citizen Award. This is the second such award he has received from that organization (both awards are described further down on this page).

Heard about this a while ago. Certianly fortuitous, but I would hardly call him the "greatest hero of all time".. He merely made the decision that any reasonable person would have made.

Thanks to the intuition of Stanislav Petrovthis, a Russian angel-hero, many of us we are still alive. This true story is hair-raising!

Do you know this man??? You should know his, in 1983 he helped avoid the earth as we know it and we have only him to thank for providing us another chance to make things right.
