This is both terrifying and reassuring. Standing up for my right to be respected as an atheist is a whole lot easier in England now than when I was a kid (although we still have a long, long way to go), and it's good to see that things are moving forward in the States.

I am not atheist but agnostic, I have been since around January; and my heart bleeds for this girl who is atheist; after seeing the side of organized religion I have seen in the past year, I find it hard to believe these "pastors"; as my "wise beyond her years" friend Wintonsylus said in a previous post, "Blindly following anything or anyone without question is dangerous and irresponsible." AMEN SISTER.

blindly following anything, or anyone, without question is dangerous and irresponsible. we all have a responsibility to question what is around us. unfortunately i don't see a whole lot of that going on when organized religion is involved. closed minds and ignorance breed hate, regardless of the belief system that you come from, or what that belief system espouses to teach.

if the people in that community truely aspired to be "good christians" that girl would not be homeschooled. she would not be crying, and afraid. she would not be questioning who she is and everything that she has been taught because its different and not understood.

is this "good" done in the name of god?

didn't think so.

Really sad, but I'm glad she had the nerve to stand up to the people at her school. Too many kids are coerced into feigning a belief system just to fit it.

What happened to this girls is totally unacceptable. People should have a right to believe what they want, and as long as they're not hurting other people, why should they be treated like a criminal?!

Interesting 20/20 segment and just as interesting response. To the Atheist who posit religion is harmful why are there so many who believe in God? I am confident that there are many good moral atheist. And if 90% of the US population believes in God not all of those are good moral people but a vast majority should be! Considering what the Christian religion teaches there should be enormous good being done in the name of God. Atheist do not believe in this. Atheist believe religion is harmful. Atheist are sure to feel hostility and yet do they not see the hostility they have against religion?

I would love the say this is ridiculous, as if this is an exceptional case, but I have no doubt this happens much more, but simply not reported.

As Dawkins says - it is time to stop respecting religion. Christians, Jews, Muslims - they all call for blood and hide behind a supposed veneer of respectability. I don't think this means religious people are bad, they are simply misguided. Stop respecting religion.

God is love?
A video showing the strong prejudice against atheists in the US, in this case a young girl is bullied out of school by pupils and teachers.

What a shame this girl is going through this emotional abuse, all because a group of people can't accept that not everyone has the same belief system.

This is a great video all about the deep darkness that the poor religious folks in Hardesty, Oklahoma have to deal with because their heads are inserted so far up their bums.
