What a great spin to a decision that is suggested to actually be the Iraqis'. Read the corporate media's spin on the political charade that is another illustration of a failed US foreign policy. The US purports to have given sovereignty to the al Maliki government in June of 2004, yet nearly all of the country's biggest decisions have been shaped and heavily influenced by US military and State Department personnel. From the privatization of Iraq's national industries, including oil, to policy decisions that marginalized Sunnis and stoked the insurgency the Bush administration has steered the current Iraqi government into this latest decision, but with a twist. Both parties are now vested in each other's mutual success. The al Maliki government needs the military to protect them from the plethora of organized groups chomping at the bit for a chance to take Iraq's political reigns. At the same time Bush needs al Maliki to ask for a continued US military presence since Iraq's security forces are growing but with questionable abilities. This match made in heaven scenario will continue to unless we demand that Bush order our troops to return NOW.

A puppet government offering its master to stay... That's news. And I guess that proves their "independence" - to "choose".
