A student of Matejko, into his painting he introduced folk tales, Greek myths and end-of-the-century angst. Malczewski's art is an explosive mixture, joining eroticism with mysticism, folk art with classical, brutal sensuality and unbearable pathos with irony. However, his mad, unpredictable imagination did not merely create symbolic brainteasers, but also moody, lyrical landscapes .
