Goodbye, Mia. I didn't know you. We never met. Regardless, you inspired me anyways. As Huxley said: Blue skies, Mia, blue skies. If only more people would be organ donors. You can't take em with you.

An inspiring story of tragedy turned into a gift. Thanks, Hux.

one of huxley's cohorts, she gave a gift that is invaluable. i personally know 4 people who have had organ transplants (2 hearts, a liver and a kidney) not to mention loads of bone marrow people. i've talked to my family. i'm a registered donor (it's more than your driver's license, people), give blood (well, not for the next year. thanks, laos) and am on the bone marrow registry list too. do i think i'm special? sadly, yeah, i do, because so many people haven't talked to their families, done the paperwork, or have this strange need to be "whole" when they die. dudes, you rot. believe me, i'm a biologist. you are not mr. jesus*. i think what an awesome legacy to leave, to give so many people life, or even sight. and i like to believe whoever gets my organs will take on a part of me, meaning that they'll start swearing a lot, buy far too many pairs of tall boots and start talking a lot more. my best friend growing up still has a mom, my childhood buddy still has a dad. my friend steve, who had a bad headache, had a nap and woke up with kidneys that no longer worked because of some fucked up virus, is still alive. one person was lost but several others were saved, and somehow that's probably comforting for the friends and selfless family of this person. *if you believe in that sort of thing.

A requiem for Mia...

I did not know Mia very well. We met once, briefly, and didn't talk very much.

Sometimes, though, that's enough to get to know the essense of a person - at least the part that shows in public.

I will remember her as a smart-mouthed, playful person with an infectious laugh.

I will also remember her as "one of the Canadians"; she was a member of the womens Canadian National Skydiving Team, the Catwomen.

I didn't notice this at the time, but when I think back about it, I realize that she exemplified Canadian-ness: a friendly but low-key personality, competence without a hint of arrogance, and above all an open and accessible friendliness.

For the Canadians who read my blog: you've lost one of your national treasures.

I regret that I didn't get to know her better.

Blue Skies, Mia.
