  • Letters from BBC Television Licensing/intro

From the page: "At the end of 2005, I decided not to renew my television licence. I found that my television viewing consisted almost entirely of tapes of old programmes purchased off Ebay, and that my watching of broadcast television was less than an hour a week. I have therefore decided... more

The only thing worthwhile about the BBC is Attenborough. Once he's gone it's pointless. I got loads of these stupidly intimidating letters and I don't even own a TV at all. This is a good website that more people should see.

I actually support the licence fee. I think having primary national TV network that is not commercially funded is a great asset. However, I by no means support the methods used by the TVL/BBC to try and enforce the paying of TV licences through a mixture of fear and baseless threats.

As a student living in halls (dorms to you US folks) I do not even own a TV. Yet about once every week, I get a letter addressed to "The Legal Occupier" (come on, you don't even know my name, how can you actually expect me to take you seriously) warning and threatening me that if I do not get TV license, I could be liable to prosecution. Each letter implies that inspection, and then prosecution is imminent. However, I have yet to have the TV inspectors knocking on my door. Furthermore, it gives a phone number to call to tell them if I don't own a TV, yet it states that I may still be liable to an inspection to confirm my claims. Well, in that case, I may as well just let them waste their money 'investigating' my case, as I'm certainly not going to waste mine calling their 0845 (a premium hotline) number.

Amazing. In the states, 60 channels of cable is about $300 a year, with satellite even cheaper.

I know these letters all too well. Is it really so hard to comprehend that even though its the twenty first century someone might not have a TV?

I lived in England for a year and would receive these periodically. It was always rather confusing considering that I did not even own a television.

TV licences belong to the Dark Ages. But like most corporations the BBC is addicted to money. A clearly-written and useful site.

Oooh...I know how you feel, mate! I get letters from this lot all the time...as they just don't seem to understand that some of us do not have a TV.
