First class interactive Flash history timeline brought to you by the folks at the BBC. Search by year and you're swiftly transported to events on or around the chosen date. Filter by England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales or select the whole of Britain. There's also a "Take a Journey" button and then main stage area features pleasant background images. Can't fault it!

It's a difficult task to produce an 'interactive timeline' of anything. The results are often poorly executed. BBC History has taken on the task and has produced an exemplary timeline for British History. The user interface is intuitive and facilitates viewing history at different time-scales. Each important event is described tersely with balloon hints. Clicking on the event brings up a brief (~100 words) write-up. Most importantly, BBC History leverages its comprehensive database of articles by providing links to more detailed discussions.
