BassicTech News Blog : Remapping the Universe using this GUI

This display is being compared to the display on the movie "Minority Report".  I see this as eyecandy at least in it's current mode of use. Home use? They don't call us couch potatoes for nothing. Presentations? Having the presenter get in front of the presentation to move it...

Wow! Check out this user interface!

That is the most incredible user interface I have ever seen. For the first time, the drab cliche "The future is now," has come true.

Wow... I want one, this would be very nice for software design... especially for creating UML... From the page: "Remapping the Universe using this GUI I was fascinated by the visual user interface used in the movie Minority Report. Is now seems that Perceptive Pixel has made a fully functional working technology for this kind of user interface."

This is what the computer to human interface should work like. The mouse keyboard interface is very lacking.

I certainly understand all the practical implications that JeraDarklighter mentions regarding this technology...but it doesn't stop me from thinking this is pretty darn cool (but then again, I'm total sucker for the latest gadget). It would be fun to try out.

This "Minority Report"-style GUI looks pretty darned cool... that said, not very long ago I read an article by usability guru Jakob Nielsen on why this isn't really a good idea. Here's an excerpt: "In Minority Report, the characters operate a complex information space by gesturing wildly in the space in front of their screens. As Tog found when filming Starfire, it's very tiring to keep your arms in the air while using a computer. Gestures do have their place, but not as the primary user interface for office systems. Many user interfaces designed for the movies feature gestural input and 3D data visualizations. Immersive environments and fly-through navigation look good, and allow for more dramatic interaction than clicking on a linear list of 10 items. But, despite being a staple of computer conference demos for decades, 3D almost never makes it into shipping products. The reason? 2D works better than 3D for the vast majority of practical things that users want to do. 3D is for demos. 2D is for work." Nielsen goes on to lament that because movies feature very visual GUIs that capture people's imaginations, a lot of R&D money ends up being spent on glitzy ideas that really don't have a lot of practical use. I've always felt he was a bit stodgy about design and usability, but the guy does make a pretty decent point. The full article can be found here: Usability in the Movies - Top 10 Bloopers
