From the page: "Yesterday, a gamma-ray burst went off that was so bright that had you been looking at the right spot in the sky you could have seen it with just your own eyes!"

Holy Haleakala! Yesterday, a gamma-ray burst went off that was so bright that had you been looking at the right spot in the sky you could have seen it with just your own eyes!

We just better hope that one doesn't go off in the Milky Way or we'll be smoked.

From the page: "In the few seconds that a gamma-ray burst lasts, it packs a million million million times that much energy into its beams. In other words, for those few ticks of a clock the GRB is sending out more energy than the Sun will in its entire lifetime."

Were any pictures captured of this naked eye visible Gamma Ray Burst?

Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) so fantastically huge and close, a person could have seen it with the naked eye if they happened to be looking in the right direction. Normally I am diligently scanning the sky for just these events, but had to go to the bathroom when this one happened...drat.
