Here's a surprising fact about inkjet printers that the manufacturers don't want you to know...
arleas rated 5 weeks ago
I'm not sure my inkjet printer does this (and I don't feel like taking it apart to find out). On the other hand, I don't leave my printer on longer than I need it on to print what I need printed, and I don't print out stuff unless I NEED it printed.

It'd be nice if someone could actually verify that all inkjets do this and not just the cheapass ones like in the video.

Inkjet printers must have a way of clearing dried ink out of the way. The article exposes the means by which this takes place and the resulting waste that it causes.

Pretty interesting. I print so infrequently that my printer isn't even hooked up, but I have to agree with this one... From the page: "-- Get your photos printed at the photo store - they'll probably do a better job of it anyway, and I think even this is competitively priced with the many hidden costs of printing your own"

rivalarrival, let's see... you could have a seperate cartridge full of an alcohol or ammonia solution or something else wildly cheaper than ink which is routed to the print heads every time it needs to self-clean; you could have the ink resevoir lead to an empty ink cartridge so you can eventually reuse the purged ink instead of it being absorbed; you could have the option to have the printer notify you when the heads need cleaning so you can fucking do it yourself manually... huh. Three alternate options off the top of my fucking head at two thirty in the morning while drunk. No idea if any of these are more feasible or cost-effective than simply throwing ink down the drain, but there you go.

I had once a printer that required me to start such a selfclean after setting it up the first time. It had full catridges. after the cleaning, the software that came with the printer showed that the catridges were half empty

Oh come on, there's a MUCH cheaper method to clean printer heads. Manufacturer's should just sell a cartridge filled with "printer head cleaning solution" instead of wasting ink to do it. Extra $20 dollars sure, but it beats wasting half of your ink to do it.

I switched to laser approx 2yrs ago. The only reason you might need an ink jet is when you want to print in color "on the cheap." However color laser printers prices are coming down.

I'm fairly shocked. I mean, it's probably the easiest and cheapest way to clear the print heads - for the company that makes then, that is. But yes, that ink is from most people's point of view, wasted. I buy ink to print with, not as cleaning fluid.
